TL;DR
Battery motors are easier to install and work for most homes. Hardwired motors make sense for new builds and renovations. Here is how to choose.
TL;DR
- •Rechargeable battery motors are the best choice for most existing homes. No wiring, no wall damage, and a charge lasts months.
- •Hardwired motors are best for new construction or major renovations, when walls are already open.
- •Solar is a hands-off middle option for sunny windows.
- •All three work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home.

How long does a battery charge last?
With normal use (raising and lowering once or twice a day), a charge typically lasts several months. Recharging takes a few hours with a USB cable, and you don't need to take the shade down.
When should I choose hardwired?
Choose hardwired if you are building or renovating, have many windows on one schedule, or never want to think about charging. The wiring should be planned before drywall goes up.
Are battery motors loud?
No. Modern motors are quiet, similar to a soft hum, so they are fine for bedrooms and nurseries.
